It’s a struggle to deal with dyslexia

Surveys show that five to ten percent of the United States population is affected by dyslexia (“reading from scratch”). That means that ten out of a hundred people have to go through every day dealing with the struggles that go with dyslexia. Dealing with the issues that come with dyslexia can be very time consuming. This learning disability can turn an easy task into a very hard and frustrating thing. It turns what should be an easy paper in English class into a very changeling paper. There is no quick fix for this demanding disease.  Suffers have to deal with problems like troubles writing, reading, and understanding verbal information.

The struggles that come with dyslexia that deal with writing differ depending on the age group of the sufferer.                  A common difficulty that is shared among young children with dyslexia is problems rhyming. (what is dyslexia?).  In elementary school children begin to write poems. Having difficulty rhyming can make writing a poem a very difficult task. Many school aged children that have dyslexia have trouble with their hand writing (what is dyslexia?). Handwriting is very important in the beginning stages of schooling due to the lack of technology used in the classroom. Teachers could penalize a student because of their poor handwriting. Most teenagers are already disorganized without having to deal with dyslexia. But studies show that teens and adults with dyslexia have difficulty with organization(what is dyslexia?). This can affect a person’s writing because they could not know how to organize a paper properly. When a paper is not organized it is hard to follow and understand.

Reading is a basic tool that makes life a lot easier to live. But having this learning disability can make reading very difficult. The biggest problem that people have when suffering from dyslexia is recognizing phonemes.  Phonemes are the basic are the basic parts of speech (understanding dyslexia). Not being able to pronounce and or recognize the sound of a word will make reading very difficult. Another problem that occurs with the ability to read is reversing letters (what is dyslexia?). Common letters that are reversed our b and d. This can make information appear confusing or incorrect. With all of these problems reading many students don’t read at their expected level (what is dyslexia?). With all of these problems combined it is not a surprise that many students read below their expected level.

Having difficulty understanding verbal information can affect someone in and outside of the classroom.  In school taking notes may be hard because some teachers only give verbal information, they do not use PowerPoint’s to show the information. A lot of verbal information is shared outside of school. For example; simple instructions given by a boss at a work place could be misunderstood and then performed incorrectly. Due to the difficulty of understanding verbal information many people with dyslexia have trouble understanding jokes (what is dyslexia?). This can make a person’s social life very awkward. Having trouble understanding verbal information does not only affect the information that is coming in but it also the information that someone puts out. This is because if the information you take in does not make sense it is not going to make sense when you try and share the information with others.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that many students struggle with in school. It can hold back the potential of a very bright student. But with hard work and professional help students can overcome this learning disability. With time and practice the severity of the learning disability can be greatly diminished. So when the struggling student turns into an adult they know how to have the patience and the ability to deal with the setbacks that are in front of them.

theisis

dyslexia gives you problems like reading, writting, and verbal instructions.

info i already know and need to know

i used all my information that i gathered for my last two papers and combined everything togther.

ADHD Compared To Dyslexia
Three to seven percent of school children in the United States are affected by a disease that impairs their ability to learn (“who is affected by attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)”). This disease is known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. It is more commonly referred to as (ADHD). Children who suffer from ADHD have trouble focusing in school because they cannot sit still which affects their ability to learn in class. ADHD can be a hard disease to diagnose. Experts estimate that nearly 320 to 500 million dollars per year  are spent on ADHD medication for children that were not correctly diagnosed (“Nearly 1 million ADHD misdiagnoses, study says”). But for those who do suffer from the disease it can have a great effect on schooling and everyday life. A different disease that affects a student’s ability to learn is dyslexia. Dyslexia can make the sufferer have difficulty processing language, reading and writing. Dyslexia is well known as the disease that makes people read and write backwards. These two diseases are both labeled as learning disabilities but they are different because of who is affected, what is affected, and the accommodations that are made for people with these diseases.
Dyslexia is more prevalent in the United States then ADHD. Surveys show that five to ten percent of the United States population is affected by dyslexia (“reading from scratch”).  Unlike ADHD scientist are not sure if it more prevalent in boys than girls. Someone suffering from dyslexia is never going to grow out of the disease. This is not always the case for someone with ADHD some estimations show that nearly half of children with ADHD don’t suffer from symptoms in adulthood (“who is affected by attention deficit hyperactive disorder(ADHD)”). ADHD may be an outcome of brain injuries that were suffered because of birth trauma.  ADHD is connected to hypoxic damage which is caused by the lack of oxygen reaching parts of the brain and the reduction of blood flow during birth (“ADHD”).  Dyslexia is not a disease that is caused by birth complications. Suffers from dyslexia naturally suffer from the disease.
Both dyslexia and ADHD interfere with the brains ability to work properly. A brain suffering from dyslexia has an underutilized left hemisphere which is the side of the brain used for reading (“reading from scratch”). In ADHD the main problem is slow brain wave activity which affects the lack of control. The lack of one’s self-control is a major ability that is affected by this disease (“neurology of ADHD”).Dyslexia also affects a person’s corpus callosum which is a group of nerve cells that transfers information from one side of the brain to the other. This means that the brain cannot work together to its maximum ability which affects the person’s ability to learn.
ADHD has more positive outlook then dyslexia. There are ways for someone that is dyslexic to deal with the disease but there is no proven medication that helps with symptoms like there is for ADHD. There are more accommodations made for someone with dyslexia due to this fact. Some of these accommodations are, extra time on a test, step by step instructions, and allowing use of instructional aids (“accommodating students with dyslexia”). Accommodations are made for ADHD sufferers for example; lightened work load, provided brief instructions, provided note taking partner.  The accommodations made for students with these disabilities can help even the playing field for them.
These two learning disabilities are different in who they affect one is more prevalent in boys than girls, and the other does not discriminate in sex. Both of these diseases affect the brains ability to learn. Dyslexia affects that ability by scrambling letters around in a person’s head due to the left side and the right side of the brain not working together. ADHD gives a student trouble by making them have so much energy that it makes them hard to concentrate and fully complete a task. By law school boards have to make accommodations for people suffering from both of these disorders. ADHD can be greatly reduced outside of the classroom with the use of medication. Dyslexia is also controlled outside of the classroom but there is no easy fix, there is a lot of work put into reducing the symptoms of dyslexia. Learning disabilities are similar in the fact that they affect a person’s ability to learn but they are different in the fact that they give people different difficulties and problems to overcome.

Adahd and dyslexia are both learning disabilitys but are very similar because of who is affected, what is affected, and what accomidations are made for people suffring from these LD's

Adhd is more prevelant in boys in elementry school then girls.

Both adhd and dyslexia are prevelant in someone because there is something diffrent about there brains then most peopel.

special accomidations legally have to be made for students suffering from bith of these diseases.

what i need to know.

i need to find out who is affected by this disease, what is affected, and what accomidations are made for someone with this disease.

adhd what i know.

i know that hdhd is a learning dissablity that makes it hard for people to pay attention, sit still, and concentrait on one thing. i also know that there is medicine that one can take to help reduce these symptoms.

compare and contrast.

in this compare and contrast esssay i will be comparing adhd and dyslexia. these are two diffrent types of learning dissabilties.

Learning disabilities
If you do any studies on how children are learning in elementary school rite now you will most likely come up with a link that has something to do with learning disabilities. A learning disability is a neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information (learning disability basics). Although many people think that a learning disability is just when someone has difficulty learning things that others can grasp easily.  People that have this misconception of the disease have a hard time believing in and often just refer to the person with the learning disability as dumb. If you hear someone say “that person has a LD” they are saying that they have a learning disability. Learning disabilities affect 2.6 million students in the United States i will cover how to diagnose LD’s, common LD's, and how to treat LD's.
LD is not one disorder it is more a blanket term that covers many disorders (learning disability basics). Diagnosing a LD can be difficult because there is no pre-birth testing like there is for other mental disabilities.  The parents of the child have to wait until they start some sort of schooling. They have to wait and see if there child is having trouble learning things that the majority of kids are grasping rather easily. At this point the child has already started falling behind the class. Testing for a LD is not as easy as going to get a CAT scan or blood test. To determine if a child suffers from a LD the parents have to take the child to a specialist.  Once they arrive the specialist they will run through tests that are proven to show whether a child is suffering from a LD or not. There are many different LD’s that a child could be suffering from.
LD’s can be more or less savior depending on the person, there is not a set amount someone can be affected by these disorders. There are lots of learning disabilities for example short term memory loss is considered a learning disability. Short term memory loss could effect a child in school or a working adult. Short term memory loss would be if someone had just learned something new and had fully gained knowledge of a concept and then a time later they have completely forgotten the concept or has even forgotten ever even learning about it. More of the common LD’s are known and well documented. One of the most common LD’s is dyslexia. Dyslexia is when a person has “difficulty processing language, problems reading, writing, spelling, and speaking” (Learning Disabilities in Children).  Many people think dyslexia is just when a person reads or writes backwards but there is more to it than that.  Although it can make a person mix up the order that they see or write the letters, there is more to the disorder then just that. Another common disorder is dyscalculia; it has more to do with everyday life. Dyscalculia affects a person’s use with math, understanding time, using money (learning disabilities in children). This is a disorder that could cause someone to get taken advantage of.  For example, if someone was purchasing an item at a store and the gave the cashier more money than required and the person at the cash register  did not give the money back then the person who purchased the item would be taken advantage of.
LD’s are often hereditary which an advantage to a parent is if they know that someone in their family has or had suffered from a LD. If they notice that their child is falling behind or having difficulty in school the parent can easily begin to tie the child’s difficulty and family history together. This is when the parent should contact a professional and see what the next correct step is in helping the child. LD is a lifelong disorder there is no permanent fix for a disorder. Like other disorders there are no easy fixes. For example ADHD has medicine that can help someone cope with the disorder. ADHD is not a learning disability; they are two separate disorders (Learning Disabilities Basics).  So ADHD and a LD can co-occur in someone which would make it very difficult for that person. Since there are no easy fixes for LD’s the person that is suffering from the disorder has to do a lot of extra work to diminish the effect of their disorder. The person suffering will most likely meet with a specialist at least once a week and go over strategies that will help them cope. Most of their training will be repetition so there brain becomes used to processing the information in a new and correct way.
LD’s are disorders that will affect someone’s mind for the rest of their life. The disorders can make what should be easy tasks more difficult for those who suffer from them. As the disorder will make some situations more challenging but, they do not make them impossible. There are a lot of specialists that have been thought the correct way to help people that suffer from these disorders. The specialists are not just for children, it is never too late for someone to get help. A LD can put speed bumps in someone’s life, but it cannot stop them from doing what they want.

Things i do know
  • they effect peopels ability to learn
  • peopel are born with these problems
  • there are ways to overcome these disabilities
  • you can not get rid of the LD
  • there are tests to see if someone suffers from an LD
  • there are also specialists that help peopel deal with their LD

good and bad sites to cite research from

(LD.org) is a good website to gather research from it is represented by the national learning center. many of the info papers are written by doctors that practice in the feild. another good site is (helpguide.org) the authors of the articals are also doctors that are very informational about the learning disabilitie feild.

learning diabilities

In this blog i will be describing diffrent types of learning disabilities. I will explain how children can overcome learning disabilities, also how adults can live with learning disabities. I am dislexic, which is a learning disabilitie. I struggled with this effect all threw elemntry and middle school. I had to go to a specialist two times a week, where she would give me tricks to help with my disabilitie.  I will cover more LD (learning disabilities) than just dislexia. I am personaly effected by LD and have a intrest in learning about them and wanna learn how i can help others.
